Brief talk about-Japanese animation "Sword Art Online Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night" and the association of intellectual property

"Sword Art Online" and the association of IP

Sword Art Online (Japanese: ソードアート・オンライン, Hepburn: Sōdo Āto Onrain) is a Japanese light novel series written by Reki Kawahara and illustrated by abec. The series takes place in the near future and focuses on protagonist Kazuto "Kirito" Kirigaya and Asuna Yuuki as they play through various virtual reality MMORPG worlds. Kawahara originally wrote the series as a web novel on his website from 2002 to 2008. The light novels began publication on ASCII Media Works' Dengeki Bunko imprint from April 10, 2009, with a spin-off series launching in October 2012.

Sword Art Online has received widespread commercial success, with the light novels having over 26 million copies sold worldwide. The light novel series had good reviews, mainly on later arcs, while other series like Progressive were praised since the beginning.

As we all know, with current technology, it seems impossible to "completely dive into the virtual world" like as in "Sword Art Online". The human body and mental mind are separated through a game device. And when the body is placed in the real world, the mental mind can fully dive into the game world. After diving in, humans can do unbelieveable things in the game world that the real world can't do, including flying in the sky without any equipment or device. When injured, they can use blood supplement to quickly restore the body's energy. Cooking materials can be cut into small pieces only by touching the food, the body weight becomes lighter in the game world and it is easy to jump higher. At the same time, things that can be done in reality can also be done in the virtual world, such as being able to taste, smell, and touch food, sleep and rest, and open a store for business and trading. We believe it is difficult for everyone to imagine how science and technology will make progress.

At this time, everyone might think, in the animation, since the virtual world is similar to the real world, is there a field of intellectual property rights? In "Sword Art Online", since it is possible to open stores and sell self-innovation weapons, open bars, etc., whether there are also enterprises how about the protection of the brand, trademark and the goodwill? Can we invent our own weapons or accessories through patent protection? In "Sword Art Online", some closed test players take the initiative to write a "passing strategy" for later players for reference to pass the level, Is this protected by copyright? Can intellectual property in the real world be used in the virtual world?

Conclusion, human beings have to "completely dive into the virtural world". Even if technology can do it one day, there are still many real-world problems that need to be considered and resolved. At that time, will the field of intellectual property be considered?

Thanks for reading.
